Once you’ve made your way through the classic tourist hotspots in Sydney, it’s worth venturing a few hours out of the city to enjoy in the small-town charm of Katoomba and the striking views of the Blue Mountains. It’s the perfect place in New South Wales for a short-getaway; take in some fresh country air, dip your toes in a freshwater stream and lose yourself in one of the many scenic bush walks.
We took a two day trip last November, staying overnight in the incredibly reasonably priced Blue Mountains Backpacker Hostel. Sure, there are plenty of boutique hotels and spas available too, but if you’re on a budget, you can’t really beat $79 a night for a three-bed private room. Having our own room was especially useful as we stumbled in a little worse for wear after too many glasses of BYO booze in the local Italian restaurant. Walking all day certainly builds up quite a thirst for wine, who knew?
Be sure to visit Echo Point for the iconic views of the Three Sisters, and the endless rolling valleys; and if you’ve got the energy, comfy shoes and plenty of sunscreen, take a hike off the beaten track. When you’ve finished exploring the mountains you can also take a trip to Jenolan Caves or the Waradah Aboriginal Centre to learn more about the Indigenous people of Australia.
Have you visited the Blue Mountains before?
